On behalf of the Recognition in Anthem Project and its members and supporters, we invite you to enjoy this performance of ‘Advance Australia Fair 2.0’ in this very special place – The Utzon Room of the Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point. Yulugi means to play, dance or have fun in the Gamilaroi language. They created a musical dialogue across cultures. In National Reconciliation Week of 2021, on 31 May, Stefanie Jones and the Yulugi Ensemble, with Keyna Wilkins on piano and Gumaroy Newman on didgeridoo, combined at the Sydney Opera House to record the full three verses of our new song, ‘Advance Australia Fair 2.0’. It was known to the Gadigal people for thousands of years as a gathering place for ceremony, songs, storytelling and festivity. Our New Song Performedīennelong Point is home to the Sydney Opera House. (For more detail on project progress from the beginning, click ‘Milestones’ above). Our quest is simple - to make the song whole. They are the very engine room of the song. These verses sing of what it means to be ‘One’ and what it means to be an Australian. It was a stirring and deeply moving performance.īut an omission has been exposed - our song ‘Advance Australia Fair 2.0’ has two further verses – Verse 2 about Our People and Verse 3 about Our Values. Soon after, on 7 January 2021, singer Stefanie Jones publicly presented the ‘One and Free’ Verse 1 at the 3rd cricket test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. With one word, at last the wrong of exclusion of our First Peoples became a celebration of inclusion. It was a momentous and most welcome first step. Then on New Year’s Eve 2020 our 30th Prime Minister of Australia, the Honourable Scott Morrison introduced our ‘One and Free’ change to Verse 1 of the Anthem. The late Bob Hawke AC, our 23rd Prime Minister, gave us our National Anthem in 1984 – in his last years, as our Patron, he supported its change for the Australia of the 21st century. All strands need to be woven together to lift the weight. The human voice in song has unique power to heal and provide the setting for positive change for every Australian - to make us ONE by fortifying our core values. The refreshed National Anthem aims to contribute an important strand to truth telling and the journey towards reconciliation.

Rather, the changes are advanced in support of such policies and structures and will work alongside them. The changes proposed for one of our most important national symbols will be no substitute for practical policies and structures designed to make real and lasting differences to the lives of our indigenous citizens. Symbolism can never be a substitute for substance.
